The homeowners’ previous custom built home was quite contemporary so they wanted a different style for this home. From a design standpoint, this new house is more traditional and what I think what creates lots of interest in this house are many departures within the floor plan to create opportunities for diverse experiences in each room.
The living, dining and nook area are all fresh, bright and open creating a perfect casual entertainment space but they are separated by a moody, loungy double-sided fireplace that leads onto a very dramatic, dark dining room. A buffet is used to divide the kitchen and living room to maintain open sight lines and brightness throughout.
The husband’s heritage is Chinese so the clients wanted to infuse touches of vintage Chinese elements and we approached this in a playful manner throughout the house.
The living area is open and airy with an element of symmetry and the fireplace as the focal point. There are lots of little special corners and hidden features (like an attic playroom with a dropdown ladder) that make this house really interesting and very much reflective of the homeowner.
A blend of modern flair and family comfort, the home was created so that it flowed seamlessly between adult-oriented entertaining areas and cozy gathering places for the whole family.
The formal dining room is defined by its dramatic wallpaper, abundant natural light, and an oversized custom dining table.
Chandeliers are integrated throughout the home and in the atrium like foyer, including a fireplace by the entrance of the main level. The fireplace serves as a divider between the family-oriented side of the home and the more formal half of the home with office, powder room and dining room. All spaces are defined by their statement wallpaper.
The basement includes a bar and screening room for the whole family.
His office is adorned with what looks like traditional Chinese chinoiserie wallpaper but if you look closer it’s actually a pattern of Biggie, the Brooklyn bridge and other familiar scenes from Brooklyn.
Bold and unconventional, this design speaks to the personality and lifestyle of its residents. It balances the needs of every family member and brings a sophisticated flair to every room in the house.
