Cartier Street Residence

Project description provided by Oliver Simon Design. Photos by Tracey Ayton.

This young family came to us at the very beginning stages of building their dream home. They had just broken ground and realized how many decisions they were about to have to make. Busy with small kids and a little overwhelmed, they called us. The home was about 3000 square feet in Vancouver’s beautiful South Granville area. We collaborated with them about style and how they live, then got to work choosing finishes and furniture; the project took about a year to complete.

It’s all about the kitchen. Bright, clean and modern without being cold was the goal. We incorporated custom wood cubbies into the cabinetry to allow for some pretty displays to break up the solid white look. Dramatic black dome light pendants give the kitchen some contrast and soft warm grey colour on the lower cabinets add interest and depth.

We opted for a beautiful modern faucet in a matte black finish. This one is from Brizo and is a go-to for us because of its simplicity and price. We added a custom fabric roman shade to add softness to the room. With so many hard surfaces in a kitchen, we find it important to use some softer elements like fabric, flowers, plants, and food.

Simple, cool, and family-friendly, this dining area gave them a casual place to gather off the kitchen. The molded plastic chairs are modern looking and easy to clean. Classic and iconic light pendant by George Nelson adds a simple style.

Pro Tip: Always add a dimmer switch to lighting in the dining room. It allows for a bright, bustling breakfast area or an intimate dinner party.

This cozy living room right off the kitchen is perfect for family living. We gave them a sectional in forgiving fabric which gives enough room for the whole gang to squeeze in. A simple warm stone tile surrounds the fireplace and custom shelves allow for the display of special items and art.

Pops of colour in art and accessories add fun to this cozy family room. We chose a round, concrete table here to allow for as much room to get around as possible, and the upholstered armchair has a swivel function on the base that gives an option for tv watching or great conversations.

This master bedroom is spacious and light-filled. With its soft geometric wallpaper, its neutral colour palette and simple furnishings, its the perfect space to relax and unwind. We added black-out lining to the custom drapery panels so that a Sunday sleep-in is possible… as long as the kids cooperate.

Wall mounted, plug-in sconces free up room on the nightstand and offer late-night reading light.

The master bedroom ensuite was all about storage. We wanted a place to put all of the everyday products, and tools out of sight. This custom vanity and millwork did the trick. The black hexagon tile on the floor hides any dirt, while light streams in from two windows giving it a bright clean vibe.

A freestanding tub gives sculptural interest to the room, we added a custom wood tub tray for leisurely soaks and a heated towel rack is an extra little luxury.

Glass shower surround keeps things feeling bright and open. We designed a nice tiled shower bench to sit and used matte black plumbing for a cool modern look.
