Jamie Banfield Design and our sister company, The Banfield, were brought into the custom build of this contemporary west coast home to assist with the millwork design and craft the custom millwork for this family home. Inspired by the home’s coastal views, the intention was to create a functional family home they could entertain in while still allowing the views to sing. The family’s love of entertaining laid the foundation for a spacious kitchen with a large central island for gathering. This space was curated for all ages of the home.
Considering this busy family’s schedule, it was important to create optimal storage throughout the home to conceal the clutter of daily life. Taking cabinets to the ceiling in an open plan would not create the subtle impact we wanted. Instead, we played with scale, colour blocking and texture to bring this space to life while ensuring the design didn’t distract from the home’s stunning views.
We worked closely with the builder and homeowners on the backsplash window placement. We broke up the upper cabinet spacing into thirds to play with symmetry. We also played with scale creating different depths for upper cabinets like the 24″ deep upper cabinets. This adds impact and additional storage but also enhances the cozy factor when working in an open concept with high ceilings and an expanse of windows.
The butler’s pantry has everything you would need in a culinary kitchen and is seamlessly concealed behind a millwork door. Open storage, a custom ladder for easy access, a secondary fridge, a sink and a butcher block countertop define this space.

The homeowners love to entertain so we incorporated a built-in buffet with wine fridge into the dining space. To connect the distinctive spaces we repeated some of the same scale, colour blocking, and textural elements from the main kitchen area.
